The Bright International
Travel living room's inspiration is travel to Nepal and
India, evoking a certain magical rhythm. |
|
Everything
in these rooms were purchased as is, with the exception of the panels
above the windows. The pattern on the large ethnic patterned pillows
(on the sofa) and two large decorated white ceramic camels, both
discovered at Pier One, formed the basis of the feel, color, and
pattern choices. The interior designer and fine artist on this room
is Linda Lane.
The color pallet is maroon and gold, punched up with hot
pink, deep azure blue, and toned down with desert colors
in a variety of browns and brass, and sprinkled with green.
The woods are oak and dark mahogany. Antique silver is the
high tone, which lends the feeling of an established family
tradition.
The lighting is generalized from a central colonial ceiling
light and area lighting can be focused for reading from
three lamps; two floor lamps made of the same modern materials
and a tall clear glass vintage column table lamp from
the 1940's.
The feeling is warm and inviting, with a cheerful sense
of humor, and history to accent the large turn-of-the-century
Mission style house.
Sprinkled around are treasures - reminders of several
trips over seas to Asia. The spicy reds and golds dispel
the grey chill of the frequent Seattle winter rains, and
radiates security, a welcoming comfort, with a dash of
whimsy!

Color
Pallet
The color pallet below is the basis of the colors used
throughout the room. The sand, taupe, greens and blues
contrast with the warm colors giving the room a great
lively balance, and a persona of rich relaxation. The
two main colors are hot pink and sand. The variations
on blue in ceramic remind one of the sea. |

Styles used in this living room
| Style Name |
Why Used |
CAMPAIGN FURNITURE -
Portable furniture that folds, collapses, or is made of flat components
that can be rapidly assembled or disassembled to be packed tightly
and carried on horse carts, or by steamer overseas. It usually has
handles. Orginially designed for military use, it is associated
with the colonial period. |
Portable, compact, rectilinear,
handsome, rich woods and brass handles can store things
in reach but out of sight. Goes well with Mission style
houses and India / Oriental influenced, relates to traveling. |
MISSION Style-
Simple, rectilinear furniture, primarily of oak, in which
the construction techniques are often exposed. It represents
America's version of the English Arts and Crafts movement
and is principally associated with Gustav Stickley and the
Roycroft Community of upstate New York in the early 20th
century, from which it spread to other regions. |
Simple strong shapes with pleasant proporations,
goes with oak floors in Mission style house from the turn
of the prior century (1900) and Campagne furniture. Also
works well with leather. Rectilinear shapes fit well in
smaller rooms. |
QUEEN ANNE -
A major furniture style of the 18th century, a period rich
in innovative design. Graceful and elegant, the style (named
after the 18th century English monarch: Queen Anne reigned
1702 to 1714) is characterized by curved lines such as cabriole
legs, broken scroll pediments and rounded aprons in tables
and lowboys. |
Nice curves to offset the square furniture
in room, and allow easy passage around living room, gentel
flowing shapes without a lot of puffy details. In oak can
compliment Mission, Campagne, British Colonial (Invasion
into India, thus refers to Indian influences and world wide
travels) |
INDIA / BRITISH COLONIAL -
British formality and the need to stay warm meets necessity
-- the need in India to stay dry, light, and cool. Patterns
and details may be gilded, such as dart and arrow designs,
with armchairs calm and slightly curved dark stained wood
surfaces relieved by side and back panels in rattan. Evolved
during the British occupation of India, it is an East
meets West fusion with lightweight airy elements, and
intricately woven patterned fabrics.
|
This style is heavily influenced by a
blend of cultures, Eastern and Western. It reflects the
owner's own interests in maximizing input in art and philosophy
as well as cultural appearances.
It handles gold, red and maroon tones very well, and adds
refined and natural textures. |
BALL-AND-CLAW FOOT -
Carved-foot motif that depicts a crane's claw gripping a
ball or an egg. While it is most associated with 18th-century
English and American furniture, it originated in China as
a dragon's claw clutching either a crystal ball or a pearl
or other jewel.
|
Wish fullfilling jem the dragon holds
represents wealth. Curved feet goes well with cabriole legs
of Queen Anne style. Brings Asian fusion influence into
the room from a historical angle. |
MODERN -
Clean, architectural and streamlined 20th century furniture
with roots in the German Bauhaus School of architecture
and Scandinavian design. Sometimes known as International
Style.
|
Lamps in this style provide elegance,
with their modern reinterpretation of urns from history
in translucent maroon resin pulls other diverse color and
curving female shape elements together. |
Piecrust Table:
A round occasional table set on a three-legged pedestal
base, ornamented with a edging resembling a crimped pie
crust. |
Side table to display silver collector
aniques; tea, coffee pots and hand mirrors. Interesting
shape reflected in small silver metal intricately carved
box of the same shape. |
SHAKER:
American religious sect in the 18th and 19th centuries that
practiced simple living and fostered a genius for excellent
design combining functionality and beauty. Design features
include straight, tapered legs, and woven-strap chair seats. |
Simple reinterpretation of Shaker
style the sofa table, in glass and brushed steel, allows
more sunlight into the room from the front window, which
washes on the floor under the sofa. Goes well with Mission
and Campagne and has no frills to compete or take up space. |
Sideboard:
A serving piece with drawers and/or open shelves for displaying
plates and silver. |
Matches existing furniture and supports
a TV set with grace. Bamboo legs integrate well with Asian
influence, and idea of Asian and worldwide travel. |
Tea Table:
A small portable table, frequently used in place of a coffee
table. Table top often has raised edges resembling a tray
and side pullouts for candles.
|
Occational tables for guests. |
Transitional:
Design that blends influences from various style categories. |
Discriptive of this style |
Valance:
An overdrapery treatment made of fabric or wood; designed
to conceal hardware and fixtures while providing a decorative
touch.
|
Adds drama, depth, unites colors, and
conceals curtain rods. |
Block Foot:
