Living room Makeover - Christmas
A $1000.Christmas livingroom makeover
Seattle Washington, December
2005
The lovely 19 year-old daughter of a Seattle-based family of musicians
asked Wonderlane to help them with a makeover in time for Christmas
2005. A limited budget was the number one issue, closely followed
by the approaching holiday, and the need for their funky personalities
to shine, a comfortable place to listen and play music, and keeping
open space to dance!
So -- What did we do? A mix of very modern and playfully brightened
and updated Queen Anne styles matching and warming up the old Beacon
Hill house; first we removed all existing furniture, (sorry no before
picture - let's admit it no one wanted to see it! two shabby 1980's
brown plaid sofas and a brown bookshelf) then we added:
1. A very comfortable modern red sofa ($400 Craig's List). Contemporary
furniture can sometimes be pretty to look at but uncomfortable - we
found a couch that was designed to listen to music on!
2. Slip covers on armchairs (three chairs: free, $2, $10; five styles
of slip cover fabric from Pacific Iron and Fabric in South Seattle,
sewing labor traded for a new IPOD won in a MSN Spaces blog writing
competition),
3. Red Ikea floor to ceiling curtains (3 sets at $40 per set + $10
per set of curtain rods),
4. Sofa throw (Cost Plus World Market import store, Lynnwood $32)
5. Painted a oval coffee table red, and spray painting pink florescent
cabriole legs and feet! (free from Wallingford yard givaway - red
oil paint $10, spray paint $3),
6. New lamp shade for antique column lamp (shade was less than $10
on sale at JC Pennies), the lamp base and matching French accent table
from the family's existing collection.
7. What we call the "Space Needle Lamp" it's a fantastic
find a tall metal 1930's Aladdin Lamp (Annabelle's Consignment store,
Ballard, $18 - the electric refurbished $40 at Harold's Lamps and
Shades, Wallingford) orangie red touched up with Fire engine red (to
match the coffee table and curtains),
8. Brass 'goldleaf' touching up the French table (goldleaf $5 University
Book Store)
9. 75 year old gold framed beveled mirror (a great discovery for $40.
from Craig's List). The minor
flaws add to its appeal.
10. Lemon oil to refurbish floor (two bottles total $6 Greenwood Market
) make it easier to dance!
11. A Queen Anne side table ($20 from Kathy’s Kloset consignment
shop, Ballard) oiled to a shiney finish.
12. More fine art to be added as soon as possible. |

From the family's collection; traditional Swiss checkered
green and gold wood serving tray, blue glass candy bowl, on maroon
armchair a blue silk throw from India and matching blue and gold dragon
and firebird pillow from China, framed art by the late New Orleans
artist Lisa Hernandez, and large original print of an Alaskan gold
miner, record cover art of "It's a Beautiful Day", cream
open weave curtains over the French doors leading to the adjoining
home office, and white Christmas tree with gold and white decorations.
A new beveled mirror painted red to match table ($26 on sale at Lowes),
and tall Japanese red side table (free) - both not shown, existing
floor lamp painted bright purple with a new matching purple shade
( $15 at Ross Dress for Less). From the family's collection; a set
of red and black encyclopedias, supported by Sacramento stone bookends,
Queen Anne style TV table, a classical guitar by the fireplace, and
black metal scroll fireplace screen. A Chinese happiness red metal
table (Ross Dress for Less, $15). From Seattle -- what fun it is!
