Zen Space Renovation
new light, floors, walls, trim, paint & Furniture
After - in progress (see Before, below)

Peggy's living room makeover

Peggy's Zen Space meant renovating the wood floor and one wall, a make over on the fireplace, and removing all furniture to make room for the new selections. Potlights were installed in the ceiling (image shown below). Appropriately scaled trim added around the windows and along the floor after the room was painted. The fireplace hearth and mantel will be done in fine matte black slate (white area on the left in the above photo).

The barrel tables were discovered at Fred Meyers, and add an earthy texture as a counterpoint to the white sofa, while it relates to the paperbag brown feature wall.

The existing brick colored stone fireplace was cracked in several places and the old hearth was fashioned from patterned 1970's tile mounted on piece of plywood affixed to the wood floor. We removed all of the tiles, including those serving as the landing at the front door, the glue and nails holding the old tiles in place.

Primed and faux stone painted out the dark brick. We wanted a minimal effect, for low cost; we filled the cracks and underpainted the fireplace with a medium grey-brown acrylic paint, and we used a lovely paperbag wall paint to lend depth, and give more of a feeling of stone.

The elements to complete this room include ceiling to floor curtains (from Ikea, with added details) for added softness and flow, a Japanese sideboard / entertainment center for storing CDs, DVDs, magazines and books, and a screen to secure privacy, and filter the bright southern light which flows in from the very large windows.

Fine and poster art, an entry rug, and a large water sculpture will be added as soothing elements for Peggy -- an avid mediator who loves the environment and is accomplished gardener.

The next room we will renovate is the second bedroom which will become her study and additional closet space, in a modern style - we expect to make use of a light coral color.

peggy's pillows
Peggy choose a white sofa, custom ordered from JC Pennies, and added some cheerful Indian silk and cotton pillows.

Peggys livingroom lights
This shows the potlight installation in the occationally dark living room ceiling. Peggy was so delighted in how they turned out, because in the beginning felt they were not needed. Afterwords she remarked - "I have been living in the dark - this is so very much better. I love my new lights."
Before
Peggy's Zen Space means renovating the wood floor and one wall, a make over on the fireplace, and removing all furniture to make room for the new selections. New paint and a completely new look. There's After, but then was Before...
