Product: RealPlayer 4.0, RealPlayer Plus 4.0

Problem: Can I use RealPlayer 4.0 with the AOL 3.0 Web browser on Windows 95/NT?

Recommended Solution: The RealPlayer 4.0 and RealPlayer Plus 4.0 are compatible with the AOL 3.0 browser for Windows 95/NT. Here are 4 steps to verify you have compatible versions of the AOL browser and Player software configured correctly.

1. Verify your computer has the correct version of the AOL browser, 3.0 2. Download and install the RealPlayer 4.0, or RealPlayer Plus 4.0 version. 3. Manually configure AOLs browser to recognize the RealPlayer 4.0 4. Test the Player; try it out on some cool files!

1. Verify upgrade to AOL 3.0 browser for Windows 95

America Online's current browser is 3.0. There are two versions of this browser, one for Windows 3.1.x, and one for Windows 95/NT. You need the Windows 95/NT version to be compatible with the 4.0 RealPlayer or Plus version.

The RealPlayer and RealPlayer Plus 4.0 are currently available for Windows 95/NT (not available yet for Windows 3.1.x).

Using the Windows 95 or Windows NT computer system, please download and install the 32-bit AOL 3.0 browser for Windows 95/NT for compatibility with the RealPlayer 4.0 or RealPlayer Plus.

AOL members can download the Windows 95 version of the AOL 3.0 browser for free. Sign on to AOL, select the "Keyword" icon, and when the dialog box appears type the word "upgrade". The screen for the AOL 3.0 browser will come up and walk you through the upgrade steps.

2. Download and Install RealPlayer 4.0

Once you have installed AOL's browser, you will need to install the RealPlayer 4.0. To get the latest version of RealPlayer, go to the following Web site:

http://www.real.com/products/Player/Playerdl.html

If you are using Player Plus, you can download the latest upgrade for RealPlayer Plus from your Personal Timecast Page or from the following web site:

http://www.real.com/products/Playerplus/4.0Download.html

Once the file is downloaded to your hard drive, double-click on the file to start the installer. During installation of the Player, when you are asked to select a browser, choose Microsoft Internet Explorer.

3. Manually Configure the 3.0 AOL Browser

Once you have installed the AOL browser and RealPlayer, manually configure the browser to automatically launch the RealPlayer whenever you click on a RealAudio or RealVideo link. Follow the steps below:

A. Launch AOL 3.0 after installing the RealPlayer
B. From the menu bar, click on the "Globe" (internet) Icon.
C. Select the "Prefs" button in the menu at the top
D. Click on the "Programs" tab
E. In the Viewers section, click on the "File Types..." button
F. Select "RealAudio File" in the "Registered file types" list
G. Click the "Edit..." button
H. Verify that "open" is listed in the window under Actions
I. Click on the "Edit..." button
J. Verify that the path name in the "application used to perform action:" field is correct, ie references the rvPlayer.exe. If it is not, browse to where rvPlayer.exe is located on your computer (default is in c:\real\Player\rvPlayer.exe) and click OK.

If a RealAudio entry does not exist in the "File Types", follow these steps:

A. Click "New Type"
B. In the "Description of type" field, enter "RealAudio File"
C. In the "Associated extension" field, enter ".ram"
D. In the "Content Type (MIME)", enter "audio/x-pn-RealAudio"
E. Click on the "New..." button
F. Type "open" in the "Action:" field
G. Type "C:\real\Player\rvPlayer.exe" ("path name") in the "Application used to perform action:" field

If you have installed the RealPlayer into a different directory put your path name in the "Application used to perform action:" field or select browse, then select the path to the rvPlayer.exe application.

4. Test the Player

Test your installation by pointing the AOL browser to
http://www.timecast.com
and select RealAudio links from the Audio Guide and RealVideo links from the Video Guide.

Player Plus users may wish to try out the Plus Zone, by choosing the Sites menu item within the Player Plus, and selecting PlusZone.

Note for Windows 3.1.x users:
If your system is running Windows 3.1.x, use the RealAudio 3.0 Player. RealNetworks will release a 16-bit version of RealPlayer 4.0 for Windows 3.1.x sometime in the near future.

Question: I have a comment or question for NPR.

Solution:
If you have comments you would like to send to NPR directly, please see the following web site for the appropriate email address:

http://www.npr.org/inside/contactnpr/

Here are the answers to several common questions about NPR:
Q. Why are all programs not available?
A. Progressive Networks relies on NPR to provide the RA files. However, NPR frequently edits out some stories on its programs, making them unavailable to us and to our users. If you are interested in obtaining unavailable content, NPR provides tapes of its broadcasts.

Q. Why is there a delay of a few days in shows appearing on the Web site?
A. The editing process takes time, which is the reason for delays in providing NPR content on our site.

Q. Can I do a search of the NPR archive?
A. We are unable to provide a search engine for the NPR content due to copyright laws.

Product: RealAudio Player 2.0

Question: When trying to listen to the 'play here', the Macintosh version of the RealAudio Player 2.0 tries to download a .ram file.

Solution:
When the RealAudio Player 2.0 for Macintosh tries to download a .RAM file instead of playing the audio file, the helpers for the browser need to be reconfigured.

There are two ways to reconfigure the browser. One is to reinstall the RealAudio Player; the installation process will automatically configure the browser for you. The second is to manually configure the browser.

To manually configure the web browser, follow these steps:

1) Start Netscape Navigator and select the General Preferences menu items from the Options menu.

2) Select the tab "Helpers"

3) When the Helper Application window opens, select the New button and enter the following information in the appropriate box:

Description: RealAudio
MIME Type: audio/x-pn-realaudio
Suffixes: ra,ram

4) Press the "Application" radio button and find the directory that the RealAudio Player was installed (the default is the RealAudio folder on your startup volume) then select the RealAudio Player as the application to launch.

5) Select "PNRM" in the "File type" pull-down menu.

6) Select OK.

You may also have to manually configure the Plugin for the RealAudio Player:

1) Start Netscape Navigator and select the General Preferences menu items from the Options menu.

2) Select the tab "Helpers".

3) When the Helper Application window opens, select the New button and enter the following information in the appropriate box:

Description: audio/x-pn-realaudio
MIME Type: audio/x-pn-realaudio
Suffixes: rpm

4) Press the "Plug-in" radio button and select the RealAudio Plugin in the pull-down menu.

5) Select OK.

If, after having reinstalled the RealAudio Player or reconfiguring the browser for the RealAudio Player, the browser continues to have problems launching RealAudio, you should rebuild the desktop file. To rebuild the desktop file on a Macintosh, shut the system off, then start it up, holding down the Option and Command keys.

Product: RealPlayer 4.0, RealPlayer Plus 4.0

Question: I installed RealPlayer 4.0 but when using RealPlayer with Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0, it causes various error messages or launches version 2.1 of RealAudio.

Solution:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 installs a version of RealAudio 2.1 during its installation process. Various errors and behaviors may indicate that this older version, the RealAudio Player 2.1 is still present on your system. The older version may also launch instead of RealPlayer or RealPlayer Plus 4.0. To correct this, make a clean installation of just the RealPlayer 4.0 components by eliminating all prior versions of the Player, and then reinstalling RealPlayer 4.0.

If you are using Player Plus, be sure to locate your serial number before starting this process. You will need it to reinstall. This number can be found on the back of the CD case, if you purchased the boxed product, in the About dialog box, found off of the Help menu, of later versions of Player Plus, or in the confirmation e-mail Progressive Networks sent after you purchased the product on-line.

Start the elimination process by removing all RealAudio software from the system by deleting the "raPlayer" and "real" directories, and any other files related to these applications. These are detailed as follows:

In C:\RAPLAYER (or the directory specified during the installation):
RAPLAYER.EXE

Product: RealAudio Player 3.0, RealAudio Player Plus

Question: How do I configure the Macintosh RealAudio Player to play rather than download a .ram file.

Solution:
When the RealAudio Player 3.0 for Macintosh tries to download a .RAM file instead of playing the audio file, the helpers for the browser need to be reconfigured.

There are two ways to reconfigure the browser. One is to reinstall the RealAudio Player; the installation process will automatically configure the browser for you. The second is to manually configure the browser.

To manually configure the web browser, follow these steps:

1. Start Netscape Navigator from the Options menu select the General Preferences option.
2. Click on the "Helpers" tab
3. When the Helper Application window opens, select the New button and enter the following information in the appropriate box:

Description: RealAudio
MIME Type: audio/x-pn-realaudio
Suffixes: ra,ram

4. Press the "Application" radio button and find the directory that the RealAudio Player was installed (the default is the RealAudio folder on your startup volume) then select the RealAudio Player as the application to launch.
5. Select "PNRM" in the "File type" pull-down menu.
6. Select OK.

You may also have to manually configure the Plugin for the RealAudio Player:

1. Start Netscape Navigator from the Options menu select the General Preferences option.
2. Click on the "Helpers" tab
3. When the Helper Application window opens, select the New button and enter the following information in the appropriate box:

Description: audio/x-pn-realaudio
MIME Type: audio/x-pn-realaudio
Suffixes: rpm

4. Press the "Plug-in" radio button and select the RealAudio Plugin in the pull-down menu.
5. Select OK.

Product: RealAudio Player 2.0

Question: When I try to install the RealAudio Player 2.0 it says "Can't find airmos.exe"

Solution:
When the RealAudio Player 2.0 is installed, it looks for the browser in the Path (Windows 3.1x) or in the Registry (Windows 95) during the configuration process. If AirMosaic has been deleted, and this was the default browser, the error "Can't Find AirMOS.EXE" will occur.

There are two possible solutions to this. One is to reinstall the browser and then reinstall the RealAudio Player. The second is to click the Cancel button during the RealAudio installation, launch your system's current browser, and reinstall the RealAudio Player. Either of these options will allow the RealAudio Player to run through the code that configures the browser helper.

It is possible that you will need to manually configure the browser helpers for the RealAudio Player after installation if the default browser is not found during this process.

Manual configuration procedure for Netscape Navigator:
1. Start Netscape Navigator and select the General Preferences menu items from the Options menu.
2. Select the tab "Helpers"
3. When the Helper Application window opens, select the New button and enter "audio" in the Mime type field and "x-pn-realaudio" in the Mime subtype field select "OK"
4. Enter "ra,ram" in the Extensions field.
5. Press the "Launch Application" radio button and find the directory that the RealAudio Player was installed (the default is the RealAudio folder on your startup volume) then select the RealAudio Player as the application to launch.
6. Select "PNRM" in the "File type" pull-down menu and select OK.

Note that most browsers have helper preferences that the user can manually configure.

Question: I have installed RealAudio Player 3.0 or RealAudio Player Plus 3.0 on a system with Microsoft's Internet Explorer 3.0x and I'm getting various error messages from my Player.

Solution:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 installs a version of RealAudio 2.1 during its installation process. Various errors and behaviors may indicate that this older version, the RealAudio Player 2.1, is still present on your system. The older version of the Player may also launch instead of RealAudio Player 3.0 or RealAudio Player Plus 3.0. To verify that you have a clean installation of just the RealAudio 3.0 components, eliminate the prior versions by uninstalling them, and then reinstall the RealPlayer 3.0.

If you are using Player Plus, be sure to locate your serial number before starting this process. You will need it to reinstall. Product: RA Encoder 3.0

Question: My ISP uses a RealAudio 1.0 or 2.0 Server. Where can I get a RealAudio 1.0 or 2.0 Encoder, my ISP only provides a 1.0 or 2.0 Server.

Solution:
If your ISP provides only a RealAudio 1.0 or 2.0 server and you need to encode files to play on these older servers, use the RealAudio 3.0 version of the Encoder.

The RealAudio 3.0 Encoder has ten encoding algorithms, including the original RA 1.0 algorithm, 14.4, and the RA 2.0 algorithm, 28.8. Thus, the 3.0 Encoder can be used to create 14.4 RA or 28.8 RA files.

The RealAudio 1.0 Server can serve 14.4 RA files. The 2.0 version of the Server can serve both 14.4 RA and 28.8 RA files.

If you are renting RealAudio streams from an ISP, and need to use the live Encoder, contact your ISP to use theirs. The 3.0 Encoder cannot be used in conjunction with the RealAudio 2.0 Server to serve live streams. Note that the 1.0 Encoder cannot do Live Streams.

Product: RealPlayer 4.0, RealPlayer Plus 4.0

Question: I receive an "Expired" error message on RealPlayer 4.0 or RealPlayer Plus 4.0, even after reinstalling the 4.0 version.

Solution:
If RealPlayer 4.0 or RealPlayer Plus 4.0 continues to give you a message that the version has expired, even though you have just reinstalled the 4.0 version, this may be due to a variety of causes. To remedy this error, do a clean installation with the most current version of the RealPlayer 4.01 or RealPlayer Plus 4.01.

Performing a clean install removes any old RealPlayer components from your system, including the Player's preferences file. This will help verify that your Player is correctly installed and eliminates possible errors due to older libraries, and other components in use.

To delete all Player components from your Macintosh, perform the following steps:
1. From the desktop Finder menu, select File, then select Find File
2. Within the Find File dialog box, under 'Find files on local disks whose names contain __" type the word "real"', click Find.
3. Select all the files that appear by pressing the "command (Apple)" and "a" keys.
4. Verify that no files selected are personal files with the word "real" in them. To deselect those you wish to keep, hold down the shift key as you select them.
5. If you wish to keep the Player Installer you already downloaded, hold down the shift key and deselect the Player Installer by clicking on it from the list of files.
6. Drag all of the files to the trash.
7. You can empty the trash at this point if you like.

To reinstall the Player, restart your computer with only the System 7.x Extensions. To verify you are using these system extensions:
1. From the Apple Menu, select the Control Panel.
2. Select the Extension Manager.
2. If you are using a custom extension set, name the current set of extensions you are using. To do this, select "Save Set" from the drop down "Set" menu and assign them a name.
3. Select "System 7.x" from the "Sets" drop down menu.
4. Restart your Macintosh.

This will temporarily disable non-essential extensions which may conflict with software installation. The system will now have only the standard set of Apple's features and extensions turned on, including Internet connectivity. This enables the Player installer to complete the part of the installation procedure which takes you to content on the Internet.

Once you have restarted with System 7.x Extensions only, run the Player installer. After you have finished successfully you may wish to rebuild your desktop file.

Apple recommends that you rebuild the desktop file after you install new software. To rebuild the desktop file, hold down the "Command" and "Option" keys while you restart the computer. Keep the keys held down until you see an alert reading "Are you sure you want to rebuild the desktop file on the disk "nameofhardrive"?" Release the keys and click "OK". This process may take several minutes.

If you wish to return to the custom set of extensions you were using before you installed the Player, select your saved custom Extension Set in the Extension Manager.

Finally, reinstall the RealPlayer or RealPlayer Plus 4.01. The RealPlayer can be downloaded for free from:

http://www.real.com/products/Player/Playerdl.html

To redownload the RealPlayer Plus, within the RealPlayer Plus Sites menu item choose PlusZone. From the PlusZone page, click on Upgrade Subscription, and click on Upgrade Now. You can also download RealPlayer Plus from the following Web site:

http://www.real.com/products/Playerplus/4.0Download.html

We regret any frustration this may have caused you.

Product: RealVideo Encoder 4.0 beta

Question: Where do I find the cevents compiler in RealVideo Encoder 4.0 beta?

Solution:
There is a new tool to compile synchronized multimedia files in the RealVideo Encoder 4.0 beta. It is called RMMerge, and replaces the cevent compiler that used to be in the RealAudio Encoders 2.0 and 3.0.

In order to compile synchronized multimedia files, you will need the cevent32.dll (or cevent.dll). This file can be found in the new RMMerge tool which is installed with the RealVideo Encoder 4.0 beta.

RMMerge.exe, in conjunction with the rmevents.dll, replaces the old cevents.exe or cevent32.dll files.

For more information regarding the RMMerge tool, please see the RealVideo Encoder 4.0 beta release notes located in the Technical Support Library at:

Question: When playing an RA file with the Player, I get "Error 19: An error occurred while trying to connect to the RealAudio Server"

Solution:
If you receive the error message, "Error 19: An error occurred while trying to connect to the RealAudio Server", while trying to play an RA file with the RealAudio 2.0 or 3.0 Player, one of the causes is that your computer is probably behind a firewall. Other reasons are listed at http://www.realaudio.com/help/errors/error19.html

RealAudio Player 3.0 and RealPlayer 4.0 automatically select the most efficient mode of network transport, Multicast, UDP, or TCP, by default. Either get the final release of the Player or try manually switching from UDP to TCP in the Preferences dialog box.

The following are instructions on switching to TCP only. Open the Player or Player Plus from the RAPlayer folder, from the menu items choose View, Preferences, Transport. Click on the radio button which reads "Use Specified Transports", choose the button, "Specify Transports", click on "Attempt to Use TCP for all content" so there is an X in it. Click on the OK button at the bottom of the Preferences dialog box. Then play a file over the Internet. If this does not work, contact your System Administrator or ISP to create a proxy.

Question: Why do I receive no sound, various errors or continuous buffered play when trying to play RA, RM, or RAM files remotely on the Internet?

Solution:
Because you were unable to obtain audio or video content from the Player, I ran a tracert test of your Domain name to verify if you have a clear connection to the Internet. This test demonstrated your computer appears to be protected by a security system, called a firewall, which is why the Player is unable to make a connection.

To test this yourself , you should first determine whether or not the Player can play a local RA or RM file, such as thankyou.ra or thankyou.rm, which was copied to the system's hard drive when the Player was installed.

In order to play this file:

1. Open your RealAudio Player or RealPlayer.
2. Select Open File from the File menu.
3. Locate the RealAudio or Real directory on the hard drive.
4. Locate the thankyou.ra or thankyou.rm file.
5. Select the file and choose Open.

If you can play this local .RA or .RM clip from the local hard drive without an error, but when you attempt to play a remote file across the Internet, you hear no sound, or you receive error messages such as :

Error 1
Error 18
Error 19
Error 22
Error 26
Error 29
Error 30
Error 46
Error 47
Error 49
Error 86
Error 90
Error 107
Error 110
Error 111
Error 112
Buffered Play
a message regarding HTTP

This demonstrates that your computer is behind a security system, called a firewall. To resolve this, please contact your Internet Service Provider, ISP, or Network Administrator to obtain a proxy setting which you can use to configure your Player to access RealAudio and/or RealVideo content.

To configure the RealPlayer for a proxy setting:

1. Open the Player.
2. Select "Preferences" under the View Menu. For Mac versions of the Player, Preferences is located in the Edit Menu.
3. From the Preferences dialog box, select the "Proxy" tab.
4. Enter the information provided by your ISP for either the RealPlayer Proxy or HTTP Proxy.
5. Click "OK".

For more information about firewalls, see the firewall pages at:

http://www.real.com/help/firewall/user.html

You may receive an error for other reasons, for more information on the error, see the error pages at:

http://www.real.com/help/errors/index.html

Product: RealPlayer 4.0, RealPlayer Plus 4.0

Question: I receive an Error 18: Invalid Socket error, when I attempt to play an RA/RM file with RealPlayer or RealPlayer Plus 4.0.

Solution:
If you receive Error 18: "Invalid socket error" when attempting to play a RA/RM file over the Internet using the RealPlayer or RealPlayer Plus 4.0, it is likely that the system you are using is behind a firewall.

In order to determine whether or not the system is behind a firewall, you should first determine whether or not RealPlayer can play a local RA or RM file. One such file is thankyou.rm, which was copied to the system's hard drive when RealPlayer was installed.

In order to play this file:

1. Open your RealPlayer.
2. Select Open File from the File menu.
3. Locate the Real directory on the hard drive.
4. Locate the thankyou.rm file.
5. Select the file and choose Open.

If you can play this local .RM clip from the local hard drive without an error, it demonstrates that this error is most likely due to a networking firewall.

To resolve this error, set the proxy setting in the RealPlayer. The first step in doing this is to get a proxy setting. If you are using an ISP, or Internet Service Provider, to connect to the Internet, you can get this value from them.

To configure the RealPlayer for a proxy setting:

1. Open RealPlayer
2. Select "Preferences" under the View Menu. For Mac versions of the Player, Preferences is located in the Edit Menu.
3. From the Preferences dialog box, select the "Proxy" tab.

Question: How do I do a "clean install" of the MacOS based Player or Player Plus to verify correct installation of the Player?

Solution:
Performing a clean install removes any old components of the Mac version of the RealPlayer from your system, including the Player's preferences file. This will help verify that your Player is correctly installed and eliminate possible errors due to older libraries, and other components in use.

Question: Receive "Cannot launch setup.pif" message when launching RealAudio 2.0, 3.0, or RealPlayer 4.0 installer

Solution:
If you receive the error "Cannot launch setup.pif. Archive file corrupted, or possible download error. Please redownload this file or contact your system administrator", this is a notification from the decompression software that the file has become corrupt or did not download completely. There are several possible causes for this error.

Download problems can be caused by anti-virus software, screensavers, or other memory-resident software. When attempting to download or install the Player, you should temporary disable these programs.

When attempting to download the Player, if your system becomes disconnected during the download process, this is most likely related to network congestion. If your system becomes disconnected more than a couple times, wait until the Internet is less active and attempt the download at another hour of the day. The cause, however, could be that the connection to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) may not be stable, and in that case contact them directly to resolve this issue.

If you are experiencing difficulty downloading the Player or Player Plus installer to your hard drive try the following steps:

1. Temporarily disable anything you may have running in the background which may be causing a disconnection, such as anti-virus software or screensavers.

Software running in the background can be disabled though the following means:

Move applications listed in your Startup folders to another folder, and restart the computer.

Remark out any unnecessary applications listed in your autoexec.bat, and restart the computer.

2. Then, using the context sensitive menu, save the Player or PlayerPlus installer to your hard drive.

To do this:

Right mouse click on the download location and choose "Save Link As" from the menu items which appear, and save the Player installer to your hard drive.

Question: I receive "expired" message after reinstalling it with a fresh download of the RealPlayer 4.0 or RealPlayer Plus 4.0 version.

Solution:
If your version of the RealPlayer or Player Plus 4.0 continues to give you a message that the version has expired after you reinstall it, this may be due to a variety of causes. To remedy this error, manually uninstall the Player software and all related files, and then install the most current version of the RealPlayer 4.01 or RealPlayer Plus 4.01.

Question: When attempting to install the Irix version of RealAudio, I cannot uncompress the Irix installer.

Solution:
If you cannot uncompress the Installer for the IRIX version of the RealAudio Player, verify you have 'zcat' installed or use the "uncompress" command.

The IRIX RealAudio Player 3.0 installation program uses a command called 'zcat' to decompress the downloaded file. If your system does not have 'zcat' installed, you can also use the 'uncompress' command.

If you are still unsuccessful using either of these commands, verify that the file has not become corrupted during download.

In order to verify that the file is not corrupted, enter the following command:

sum v30_irix53.tar.Z

The file name within this command should match the name of the file that you downloaded. This command computes a checksum on the file. You should get these numbers if the file has not been corrupted during download:

46485 1585 v30_irix53.tar.Z

If the above number do not match, please download a new copy of the file and try again.
